On Thursday, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who previously was described as a Trump ally, voted for the Democrat “War Powers Act,” which aims to restrict President Trump from being able to defend the United States from terrorists, such as recently in Iran without stringent congressional approval.
Raising eyebrows, Rep. Gaetz voted for the resolution, with only two other Republicans supporting the bill—Reps. Francis Rooney (FL-19), and Thomas Massie (R-KY).
Later that evening, Gaetz appeared on the Fox News show “Tucker Carlson Tonight” to explain his decision to vote for the Democrat bill. In his defense, Gaetz said he spoke to the President, explaining, “The president told me he is more antiwar than I am, and I love the president for that. The thing is, I think a few of the advisers of the president are trying to slow-walk the administration into war. When the president relies on his instincts and we have the Trump doctrine, we kill the terrorist and we come home.”
Gaetz further explained that he voted for the resolution because he claimed the bill “did not criticize the president.”
