Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican from New York and the daughter of a Cuban exile, voiced strong criticism against progressive Democratic Representatives Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Pramila Jayapal of Washington following reports of their undisclosed visit to Cuba to discuss “human rights.” Malliotakis accused them of being “anti-American” and sympathizers of communism, citing their visit to a country with a history of human rights abuses and ties to adversarial nations.
“These are anti-American members of Congress, okay? They are communist sympathizers, and they go to Cuba, which is not only a state sponsor of terrorism, but they side with our adversaries,” Malliotakis stated during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.” She further highlighted Cuba’s relationships with nations like Iran, North Korea, China, and Russia, expressing concern over their proximity to the United States and their history of harboring fugitives and terrorists.
Malliotakis criticized Omar and Jayapal for their purported support of the Cuban government while advocating for fair wages in the United States. She emphasized the vast disparity in earnings for Cuban citizens, including her own relatives, who reportedly earn as little as $15 a month. Malliotakis questioned the sincerity of the lawmakers’ concern for human rights, pointing out that they had previously voted against a resolution standing with the Cuban people during their protests for freedom in 2021.
“The Socialist Squad and Jayapal, they all voted no to stand against the people and with the Cuban regime,” Malliotakis remarked.
The trip, which involved a small delegation led by Omar and Jayapal, took place without disclosure and amidst a worsening border crisis in the United States. The delegation, including a staffer from Rep. Barbara Lee’s office, reportedly engaged with individuals from Cuban civil society and government officials to discuss human rights and bilateral relations between the U.S. and Cuba. However, the trip was not reported by Cuban state media despite ongoing tensions between the two nations.
Efforts to reach out to the offices of Omar, Jayapal, and Lee for comment on the matter were made by Fox News Digital but were reportedly unsuccessful.
