Campaign finance scandal rocks Democrat congresswoman

The House Ethics Committee announced on Wednesday that it has initiated an investigative subcommittee to look into potential campaign finance and House rules violations by Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.).

The committee stated that the subpanel’s focus will be to determine whether Cherfilus-McCormick “may have violated campaign finance laws and regulations in connection with her 2022 special election and/or 2022 re-election campaigns; failed to properly disclose required information on statements required to be filed with the House; and/or accepted voluntary services for official work from an individual not employed in her congressional office.”

Details regarding the specific allegations were not disclosed, as it is customary for the committee to withhold such information until the investigation concludes.

Cherfilus-McCormick’s office provided a brief statement on the matter, stating, “As the Ethics Committee said in its statement, the mere fact of establishing an investigative subcommittee does not itself indicate that any violation occurred. Regardless, the Congresswoman takes these matters seriously and is working to resolve them.”

The House Ethics Committee’s decision to delve deeper into the case comes after it received a referral from the Office of Congressional Ethics in September. Cherfilus-McCormick entered the House in 2022, winning a special election for the southern Florida district to succeed the late Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.), and later securing a full term later that same year.
