New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sparked controversy with her Christmas Eve Instagram story, drawing parallels between the plight of Palestinians and the Christmas story while also describing Israel as a “violent, right-wing occupying force.” In the post, AOC shared an image of a child amidst rubble in Gaza and expressed prayers for the peace and protection of the innocent in Gaza and the occupied territories.
“In the story of Christmas, Christ was born in modern-day Palestine under the threat of a government engaged in a massacre of innocents,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. She continued by likening the challenges faced by Mary and Joseph, who became refugees, to the struggles of today’s Palestinians. The congresswoman emphasized that the Christmas narrative revolves around standing with the poor, powerless, and marginalized.
“The entire story of Christmas and Christ himself is about standing with the poor and powerless, the marginalized and maligned, the refugees and immigrants, the outcast and misunderstood without exception,” she stated.
Critics swiftly responded to AOC’s post, accusing her of omitting mention of Hamas terrorism and the victims of attacks. Some noted the absence of references to Israelis held captive by Hamas in Gaza and criticized what they labeled as “Jew hate.”
One user asserted, “Jewish Palestinians are not a thing. They were Jews of Judea then. She’s spouting make believe.”
Pro-Israel activist Andrea Karshan expressed frustration, writing, “I wish people would just enjoy Christmas and stop getting so social justice political about it.”
The controversy comes amidst Pope Francis’s Christmas Day appeal for peace, where he criticized the “instruments of death” in the weapons industry and called for an end to conflicts, particularly highlighting the situation between Israel and the Palestinians.
