The Sunshine State may soon be the home to not one, not two, but three Republican presidential candidates.
President Donald Trump, who lives at his Florida Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, is leading massively by 28 points in Florida, according to recent polls, with Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis distantly trailing the 45th President. DeSantis has yet to announce his 2024 plans.
But another dark horse could come in and upend DeSantis’ attempt at winning his home state if he decides to run.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, a Republican, is mulling a presidential run.
Politico reported:
POLITICO’s Rachel Bade, Adam Cancryn, Eugene Daniels and I sat down with Suarez for a free-ranging chat. At times refreshingly earnest, he both poked at the media’s obsession with the ex-commander in chief and its failure to understand why someone like Trump would resonate with voters.
When we asked him about Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and why his as-yet-unannounced presidential campaign appears to be struggling, Suarez redirected the conversation to deliver some news.
“I’m not here to be a political commentator,” Suarez interjected.
“I’m here, because I’m a Hispanic mayor, a Republican, who was considering running for president.”
“America is incredible,” Suarez said. “The country picks people that no one expects, oftentimes. Right?”
If he runs, the mayor if highly unlikely to garner wide support due to his lack of name ID, but it could throw a wrench into plans by DeSantis and others to attempt to topple Trump as the frontrunner.
