On Tuesday, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings announced her run on the Democrat ticket for the late Elijah Cummings’ seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, who is her late husband.
According to an interview with far-left MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, Rockeymoore Cummings, who recently resigned as the Democrat Praty of Maryland chair, said, “I believe very strongly that I have the background, the focus, the commitment and the ability to take the reins and make a good run for this seat,” She said her husband “wanted me to continue this fight.”
Rockeymoore Cummings, who was a former Chief of Staff on Capitol Hill for a New York representative, where she met Cummings, marrying in 2008, despite their 20-year age difference.
Rockeymoore Cummings went under fire for alleged corruption, in which her husband received millions from special interest groups and corporations that had business before her husband’s committee and could have been used illegally, according to an IRS complaint filed by an ethics watchdog group.
The complaint goes into painstaking detail, showing actions in the House committee and the link between the special interest group affiliated with Rockeymoore Cummings. When asked by the Washington Examiner for the group’s IRS filing, the staff refused to comment and hung up the phone.
While peddling her husband’s name, Rockymoore Cummings ran for governor of Maryland in 2017, but dropped out of the race, now firing up her political bug again, with much better odds to claim her husband’s seat in Congress. Many House Democrats have been elected due to relation to a forme member, such as Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI), who ran for her husband, John Dingell Jr.’s seat in Congress and now is in the chamber. John Dingell, Jr.’s father held the seat previous to him, meaning the Dingells have clinched onto the seat for 81 consecutive years. Apparently, Rockeymoore Cummings is looking to do the same.
According to her MSNBC interview, Rockeymoore Cummings “will undergo a double mastectomy on Friday, a prophylactic surgery based on her family history of breast cancer. She said she will recover over two to four weeks but will remain ‘laser- focused’ on her campaign during that time,” which is unclear if it is a political ploy.
Earlier this month, Rockeymoore Cummings was seen smiling and taking selfies with Nancy Pelosi at a Democrat Party of Maryland function.
Rockeymoore Cummings will face a crowded primary of six other Democrats, including former Rep. and NAACP chief Kweisi Mfume, state Del. Talmadge Branch (D-Baltimore City), who serves as House majority whip, said he intends to run, and state Sen. Jill P. Carter (D-Baltimore City) has scheduled an announcement next week.
On the Republican ticket, three candidates have announced, including Kimberly Klacik, a woman who exposed the rat infestation in the city, ignored by Rep. Elijah Cummings. To learn more about her, check out her website here.
