House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., took a strong stance against House Republicans at the U.S. Capitol, accusing them of abandoning a bipartisan agreement to fund the government and prevent a partial shutdown. Jeffries argued that the GOP’s actions were detrimental to everyday Americans.

On Wednesday, House Republican leaders scrambled to salvage the situation after their initial bipartisan deal collapsed due to conservative opposition. The agreement, designed to keep the government open beyond Friday, unraveled amidst internal GOP disputes, prompting Jeffries to hold them accountable.

“House Republicans, House Democrats, Senate Republicans, and Senate Democrats reached a bipartisan agreement to fund the government, keep it open, and meet the needs of the American people,” Jeffries said. He highlighted that the deal included disaster aid for communities affected by extreme weather. “House Republicans have now unilaterally decided to break a bipartisan agreement that they made. House Republicans have been ordered to shut down the government and hurt everyday Americans all across this country… An agreement is an agreement. It was bipartisan, and there was nothing more to say.”

Jeffries also expressed his frustrations on X (formerly Twitter), where he wrote, “House Republicans have been ordered to shut down the government. And hurt working-class Americans they claim to support. You break the bipartisan agreement; you own the consequences that follow.”

As the political drama unfolded, the national debt continued to rise, surpassing $36 trillion, with the federal budget deficit for the past fiscal year reaching $1.83 trillion, the third largest in U.S. history. The proposed 1,547-page continuing resolution (CR) bill became a lightning rod for criticism, with prominent figures like Elon Musk and Donald Trump leading the charge.

Elon Musk, co-chair of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), took to social media to lambaste the bill, calling it bloated with unnecessary spending. “You seem to think the public is dumb. They are not,” Musk responded to Jeffries on X. In another post, he celebrated the collapse of the bill, stating, “The voice of the people was heard. This was a good day for America.”

Donald Trump also vehemently opposed the legislation. In a series of posts on Truth Social, the former president dismissed the bill as “ridiculous and extraordinarily expensive,” warning Republicans against passing it without addressing the debt ceiling. “Unless the Democrats terminate or substantially extend [the] Debt Ceiling now, I will fight ‘till the end. This is a nasty TRAP set in place by the Radical Left Democrats!” Trump declared. He urged Republican lawmakers to reject the measure and vowed political consequences for any who supported it. “Any Republican that would be so stupid as to do this should, and will be Primaried,” he warned.

The controversial CR bill was unveiled on Tuesday night after extensive negotiations between Democratic and Republican leaders. It aimed to avert a government shutdown by extending funding through March 14. However, its provisions—including health care measures, ethanol fuel regulations, $100 billion in disaster aid, and funding for the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore—provoked backlash from conservatives. Many Republican lawmakers demanded a “clean” funding extension without additional policy riders.

Despite its intention to prevent a shutdown, the bill has only deepened the political divide, leaving Congress and the nation grappling with unresolved fiscal challenges. The debate underscores the high stakes in Washington as leaders on both sides struggle to balance competing priorities.

President-elect Donald Trump is laying out ambitious plans to reignite economic growth by offering incentives to major investors. Trump announced that any individual or company investing at least $1 billion in the United States would receive expedited approval for necessary permits and regulatory clearances, including environmental approvals.

“Any person or company investing ONE BILLION DOLLARS, OR MORE, in the United States of America, will receive fully expedited approvals and permits, including, but in no way limited to, all Environmental approvals,” Trump declared on his Truth Social platform, adding, “GET READY TO ROCK!!!”

This move aligns with Trump’s broader commitment to revive his first-term agenda of deregulation. During his initial term, Trump issued Executive Order 13771, which required the elimination of two existing regulations for every new one added. The policy aimed to reduce bureaucratic red tape and encourage business growth.

Jason Trennert, chairman of Strategas, described the potential impact of Trump’s return to the White House, saying the “excitement” surrounding his deregulation policies “overwhelms” concerns over trade.

If Trump’s rhetoric is any indication, his second term may bring an even more aggressive approach. He has pledged to erase ten regulations for every new one introduced. The plan signals an escalation of his earlier efforts, which were already seen as a dramatic shift from the regulatory stance of his predecessor.

Trump’s regulatory agenda stands in sharp contrast to President Joe Biden’s, whose administration has set a record for the most federal regulations in a single year. As of December 3, 2024, the Biden administration had filled 96,088 pages in the Federal Register, surpassing the previous record of 95,894 pages set by President Obama in 2016. The total is projected to exceed 100,000 pages by the end of Biden’s term.

Critics of Biden’s regulatory approach argue that it burdens businesses and stifles economic growth. Supporters, however, contend that the regulations address critical environmental, labor, and consumer protections.

Trump’s renewed emphasis on deregulation signals a clear shift in policy direction. His promise to reward billion-dollar investments with fast-tracked approvals is seen as a strategy to attract large-scale domestic and foreign investments. If successful, the approach could bolster economic growth, increase employment, and reduce supply chain bottlenecks.

With Trump’s inauguration approaching, investors and businesses are keeping a close watch on how his deregulation policies will shape the economic landscape. Some see opportunity, while others brace for potential risks related to reduced oversight.

As Trump himself declared, it’s time to “GET READY TO ROCK!”

Actress Sharon Stone has drawn significant attention for her remarks at the Torino Film Festival in Italy, where she blamed President-elect Donald Trump’s victory on what she described as “uneducated” Americans who lack passports and have never traveled abroad. The Basic Instinct star, who was in attendance to receive a lifetime achievement award, delivered a winding critique of Trump supporters and the current state of the U.S., peppered with metaphors and strong judgments.

Stone began her commentary by comparing the re-election of Trump to fascism, invoking Italy’s history with Benito Mussolini. “Italy has seen fascism. Italy has seen these things. You guys, you understand what happens. You have seen this before,” she said. Drawing a sharp contrast, she labeled the United States as an “adolescent” country, describing it as naive and overconfident. “Adolescence thinks it knows everything. Adolescence is naive and ignorant and arrogant, and we are in our ignorant, arrogant adolescence.”

She then turned her attention to the American electorate, attributing Trump’s victory to a lack of worldly experience among voters. “Americans who don’t travel, who 80 percent don’t have a passport, who are uneducated, are in their extraordinary naivete,” Stone asserted. Her remarks have fueled backlash, particularly from conservatives, who view such comments as dismissive and elitist.

Stone’s speech took an unusual turn when she launched into a discussion about “good men” versus “bad men,” a theme she tied to the election outcome. “Good men must help good men,” she said. “And those good men must be very aware that a lot of your friends are not good men… you must be very clear-minded and understand that your friends who are not good men are dangerous, violent men, and you have to keep them away from your daughters, wives, and your girlfriends.”

Her statements, which many interpreted as a veiled criticism of male Trump voters, culminated in a call to action: “This is a time when we can no longer look away when bad men are bad.”

This isn’t the first time Stone has shared controversial views on Trump. According to Breitbart News, she previously expressed a willingness to leave the U.S. and move to Europe if Trump were re-elected. Whether she plans to follow through on that sentiment remains unclear.

While Stone’s comments were praised by some for their candor, others criticized her for generalizing American voters and diminishing the legitimacy of their political choices. Regardless of public opinion, her remarks reflect the deep divisions and ongoing tensions surrounding the Trump presidency and its broader implications.

President-elect Donald Trump’s approval rating has surged to one of the highest of his political career following his Nov. 5 election victory, while Joe Biden’s approval has hit a four-year low, according to a new poll by Emerson College.

The poll shows Trump with a 54% approval rating, a six-point jump from earlier figures, with 46% disapproving. Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, noted, “Trump’s favorability varies significantly by gender, race, and age.” Among voters aged 40 to 59, 60% view Trump positively, his strongest age group. Even younger voters under 30 show increased support, with 55% expressing a favorable opinion.

Biden, on the other hand, scored a 36% approval rating, with 52% disapproving—the lowest Emerson has recorded in four years. His favorability has steadily declined, reflecting voter dissatisfaction during the latter half of his term.

Trump’s favorability marks a stark reversal from his historically low ratings after the 2020 election. For comparison, Trump never broke 50% approval during his first term, according to Gallup. Now, as he prepares for a second term, his post-election approval has surpassed previous highs, including his earlier pre-election numbers. This trend has been echoed in other recent polls, with a CBS News/YouGov survey reporting 59% of voters approving of his handling of the transition process.

The Emerson poll also highlighted demographic differences in Trump’s favorability. He is viewed favorably by 59% of white voters and 53% of Hispanic voters but only 28% of Black voters. His favorability among men is stronger (61%) than among women (48%).

The poll also gauged reactions to the 2024 election results. While 54% of voters were unsurprised by Trump’s victory, 67% of Harris supporters reported being surprised. This polarization underscores the sharp divides in voter sentiment.

Despite his victory, Trump’s favorability across broader polls remains mixed. The RealClearPolitics average places his favorability at 45.5% with 51.4% unfavorable—a split reflective of the ongoing partisan divide.

Looking ahead to 2028, the poll explored hypothetical candidates. Vice President-elect JD Vance led Republican preferences with 30%, while Kamala Harris topped the Democratic field with 37%. However, some respondents expressed interest in Trump running again, a constitutional impossibility for a third term.

The Emerson College poll, conducted from Nov. 20 to 22 with 1,000 respondents, carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

45th President Donald Trump will face off against Joe Biden in a much-anticipated debate Thursday evening, a showdown that has been months in the making. However, political strategists warn that the event’s rules might hinder Trump’s performance and play against his strengths as a debater.

Trump quickly agreed to CNN’s terms last month, which some consider disadvantageous, likely to ensure Biden would participate. Republican strategist John Thomas remarked, “Every single thing about this debate is stacked against [Trump] from both expectation setting game as well as format.”

Trump, who has been challenging Biden to debate for months, speculated that Biden’s team proposed terms they thought he would reject. “They would present it, I would say no, and they would say, ‘We can’t debate because Trump said no,'” Trump told the Washington Examiner.

The debate rules include no live audience and microphones that mute when it’s not a candidate’s turn to speak, preventing interruptions—a technique Trump frequently used in the past. This setup, combined with Trump’s contentious history with CNN, could pose significant challenges.

“Agreeing to the rules is different than abiding by them,” said Republican strategist Kevin Madden, suggesting Trump’s aggressive style might still emerge despite the constraints. Meanwhile, Democratic strategist Brad Bannon noted, “I’m not sure CNN is going to get exactly what they wanted to with the limitations they imposed on the candidates.”

Some Republican strategists believe the mic muting could actually benefit Trump by forcing Biden to speak uninterrupted, potentially revealing weaknesses. “For Trump to win, he needs to be less Trump,” said Republican strategist Brian Seitchik, arguing that Trump appearing more sensible and rational could work in his favor.

However, Trump’s lack of a live audience might be a significant disadvantage. “Trump is an entertainer, and in part, he feeds on the reaction of the room and gets his cues from the room,” Thomas explained.

In preparation, Biden has been at Camp David with his advisors, while Trump’s approach remains more informal. “Trump is Mr. Wing-it,” said strategist Liz Mair, pointing out that Trump tends to produce more memorable soundbites, a potential advantage.

Many strategists believe the debate could pose a greater risk for Biden, given ongoing questions about his mental acuity. “Biden has to prove that he has the stamina and mental acuity to do the job,” said Seitchik.

In the run-up to the debate, Trump and his allies have criticized CNN and speculated about Biden’s debate preparedness, with some suggesting he might use performance-enhancing drugs. Despite these claims, the debate presents an opportunity for both candidates to sway the electorate in a still-evolving 2024 presidential race.

During a campaign rally in Tampa, Joe Biden inadvertently created a stir with a slip of the tongue while aiming to criticize 45th President Donald Trump’s stance on abortion. The rally, which took place on Tuesday, was centered around Florida’s impending six-week abortion ban set to commence on May 1. While attempting to underscore Trump’s anti-abortion position, Biden misspoke in a way that left the audience both amused and bemused.

In his speech, Biden quipped, “I don’t know why we’re surprised by Trump. How many times does he have to prove we can’t be trusted?” This unintended error quickly became the focal point among audiences and commentators alike, as Biden appeared to suggest his own untrustworthiness rather than Trump’s.

BIDEN: "How many times does [Trump] have to prove we can't be trusted!?" pic.twitter.com/g3o9cM6zQ5
— RNC Research (@RNCResearch) April 23, 2024

The misstatement did not go unnoticed on social media, where conservative pundits had a field day. Seth Dillon, CEO of the Babylon Bee, remarked on the authenticity of the gaffe, saying, “Not satire.” Tomi Lahren from OutKick chimed in humorously, “Well even a blind squirrel finds a nut.” Fox News contributor Guy Benson simply found the comment delightful: “god, that’s good.”

Others took a more critical stance, with RedState columnist Buzz Patterson advising, “If they tell you who they are, believe them,” and GOP strategist Chris LaCivita predicting the repeated emergence of this gaffe: “You’ll see this again and again and again…..” Radio host Tony Kinnett even joked about Biden inadvertently endorsing Trump due to his verbal slips.

Edward Dowd, an author, summed up a sentiment of skepticism about Biden’s capacity, describing him as “a perfect puppet in the seat of the president right now. He can’t remember the lies handed to him and most of his supporters can’t remember what they ate for lunch. Memories of goldfish…of course no disrespect to goldfish.” Jake Schneider, GOP Rapid Response Director, concurred with Biden’s self-assessment: “Agreed, Joe — you can’t be trusted!”

This incident at the Tampa rally was just one of several gaffes Biden made over the week. On Monday, he addressed the ongoing anti-Israel protests across college campuses, where he tried to strike a balance but ended up being criticized for his ambiguous stance, which some likened to his “Charlottesville moment.” Referring to past controversial comments by Trump, Biden said, “I condemn the antisemitic protests. That’s why I have set up a program to deal with that. I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians.”

Moreover, in another confusing moment during his campaign, Biden urged voters to “choose freedom over democracy,” adding to the string of verbal blunders: “Are you ready to choose unity over division? Dignity over demolition? Truth over lies? Are you ready to choose freedom over democracy? Because that’s America.” These episodes highlight the ongoing challenges Biden faces as he navigates the complex landscape of political rhetoric on the campaign trail.

During a Senate Select Committee on Intelligence hearing, Chairman Mark Warner, a Democrat from Virginia, acknowledged 45th President Donald Trump’s foresight regarding the national security risks posed by TikTok. Warner, seldom in agreement with Trump, admitted, “It was rare for me to say that Donald Trump was right. But Donald Trump was right years ago when he pointed out the enormous national security concerns around TikTok, both in terms of obtaining data, but also think about the percentage – I think there are about 170 million Americans who use TikTok.”

Warner highlighted the widespread use of TikTok among American youth, including for news consumption, and emphasized the significant national security threat presented by China’s potential to disseminate propaganda through TikTok, a platform owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.

In 2020, during his term, Trump attempted to ban TikTok in the United States through an executive order, which was later halted by judicial intervention.

Solen Feyissa, Unsplash.

Despite his previous stance, Trump, now a presidential candidate again, has shown a more lenient view towards TikTok in 2024, acknowledging its popularity among young users. “Frankly, there are a lot of people on TikTok that love it,” Trump remarked in a recent interview. “There are a lot of young kids on TikTok who will go crazy without it.”

The House of Representatives is gearing up for a vote on legislation that could compel TikTok’s parent company to divest its ownership or face a ban in the U.S. Warner expressed hope for the bill’s success in the Senate, should it pass the House, noting, “It feels like this House bill has momentum.”

Joe Biden recently made headlines upon his return to the White House after spending a significant amount of time at Camp David. Engaging with the press at Joint Base Andrews, Biden found himself fielding questions regarding his standing in recent polls, particularly in light of a new national survey conducted by The New York Times and Siena College.

This poll indicates a challenging outlook for Biden, showcasing 45th President Donald Trump leading by five points on a national scale, a notable margin considering Trump’s polling history since his initial 2015 campaign.

The same New York Times-Siena College poll reveals a strong loyalty among Trump’s 2020 voter base, with 97% indicating their readiness to support him in the upcoming 2024 election.

In contrast, Biden’s retention rate among his previous voters appears to be less robust, with 83% of his 2020 supporters willing to back him again and a fraction expressing a shift towards Trump.

RealClearPolitics, aggregating various polls, echoes a similar sentiment, placing Trump ahead of Biden by a two-point margin nationally. This lead extends to critical battleground states, including Arizona, Georgia, and Michigan, further underscoring the competitive landscape Biden faces.

Biden’s interaction with the reporters, notably marked by a moment of frustration, highlighted his awareness of other polls that painted a more favorable picture for him, which he felt were being overlooked.

He emphatically pointed out his lead in “five in a row” polls, expressing discontent with the media’s focus on the less favorable New York Times poll, and Biden’s slurred, screaming response marked the interaction.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has leveled accusations against Nikki Haley, asserting she is attempting to gain favor with “very liberal Democrats” in her quest for the Republican presidential nomination.

In an appearance on “One Nation with Brian Kilmeade,” DeSantis shared observations from his time at Iowa caucus sites, noting an unusual trend. “The thing was, is there were 7,000 Democrats who showed up and switched to Republican on the night of the caucus. I was at a couple of these caucus sites. These were very liberal Democrats. They had N-95 masks on. They had shirts that had liberal slogans on, and that was a core part of her strategy was to appeal to those people,” he stated.

DeSantis, who recently halted his presidential campaign after trailing behind Trump in Iowa, criticized Haley’s approach, suggesting it won’t resonate in a Republican primary. “Her strategy has been to appeal to people who are kind of stock Republicans, but that’s just not going to work in a Republican primary. It’s definitely not going to work against somebody who’s as well-known and has already been president, like Donald Trump,” he remarked.

Despite facing multiple primary defeats and growing calls to exit the race, Haley remains steadfast, dismissing the notion that her campaign path is obstructed.

DeSantis further argued that Haley’s appeal seems to be directed more towards a segment of the Republican base that aligns with the establishment, rather than the broader “conservative populist voters” that dominate the party’s current landscape. “She’s really playing to the 20% who were more of McCain, Romney, Republicans,” DeSantis noted, adding, “And look, we need a big tent. We need everyone in, but once you go in that direction, you really poisoned the well with the vast majority of Republican primary voters.”

Haley has defended her conservative credentials in response to such criticisms, emphasizing her track record. “I am a hardcore conservative. I always have been,” she asserted in a recent NBC News interview, highlighting her fiscal conservatism and achievements both as the governor of South Carolina and at the United Nations.

As the South Carolina primary looms, where Trump appears to hold significant support, Haley and Trump are set to compete in a pivotal contest that could shape the Republican nomination race.
