The November elections brought a shift in the political landscape, leading to unexpected changes in how some lawmakers approached key legislation. One of the most notable examples is the Laken Riley Act, a bill that mandates federal immigration authorities detain illegal migrants who commit theft-related crimes and allows states to sue the Department of Homeland Security for damages caused by illegal immigration. Originally opposed by many Democrats, six House Democrats surprised observers by flipping their votes and supporting the legislation this time around. Here are the six Democrats who changed their stance on the Laken Riley Act [CLICK “NEXT PAGE” BUTTON BELOW TO SEE THE LIST]:

During a fiery impeachment hearing on Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), D-N.Y., put Tony Bobulinski, a former associate of Hunter Biden, under intense scrutiny. AOC interrogated Bobulinski about the specific crimes Joe Biden is accused of, demanding, “Is it your testimony today that you personally witnessed … Joe Biden commit a crime?” Bobulinski, cut off before he could fully respond, retorted, questioning how much time he would need to detail the alleged crimes, which he claims include a RICO violation and financial corruption related to business dealings with his son Hunter.

The exchange escalated when AOC pressed for specifics, to which Bobulinski listed alleged crimes, including RICO violations and corruption statutes. AOC, challenging Bobulinski, asserted, “RICO is not a crime. It is a category,” sparking a debate over the nature of RICO laws. Bobulinski attempted to clarify that RICO is a category under which crimes are charged, but the discussion was overridden by AOC reclaiming her time and criticizing the Republicans for the impeachment inquiry, accusing them of lacking evidence that [Joe] Biden committed “a high crime or misdemeanor.”

AOC’s assertion that “RICO is not a crime” quickly became a focal point of criticism, especially among Republicans who mocked the congresswoman’s statement on social media. Joe Concha, a Fox News contributor, and Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) were among those who commented on the matter, highlighting the controversy around AOC’s understanding of RICO laws, which are indeed codified under federal law and have been used in various legal contexts, including the current RICO case against 45th President Donald Trump in Georgia.

Tony Bobulinski causes AOC to have a TOTAL MELTDOWN after saying Joe Biden committed crimes pic.twitter.com/RxkkZG8LEw
— Benny Johnson (@bennyjohnson) March 20, 2024

Bobulinski has been vocal in criticizing Hunter Biden for avoiding the congressional hearing and has previously testified about the Biden family’s alleged “influence peddling” with foreign adversaries. He has called for “truth and transparency” in the political system, highlighting the need for accountability and integrity. Biden, meanwhile, has urged Congress to conclude the impeachment investigation, denying any allegations of wrongdoing.

This heated exchange and the surrounding controversy underscore the intense political and legal debates unfolding in the U.S., with implications for both the Biden administration and the broader political landscape.

After rabidly anti-Trump former Congressman Ken Buck, a Republican of Colorado, resigned from the U.S. House, leaving the chamber prematurely to attempt to mess with pro-Trump Congresswoman Lauren Boebert’s race, more are that Buck says could do the same. But with their resignations, it would leave the chamber’s majority in peril.

Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., an extreme moderate, declared on Tuesday that he will not seek re-election, becoming the 37th member of Congress to announce they won’t be seeking re-election in 2024. McHenry has a weak 82 percent conservative ranking in the current Congress, according to Heritage Action. McHenry’s district, which has been ill-represented during his entire tenure, leans Republican by 22 percent.

At the end of the first ballot for Speaker of the House, Jim Jordan did not receive enough votes to win. Patrick McHenry is seen here reading out the votes. C-SPAN vi Wiki Commons.

McHenry, a close ally of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, emphasized that this decision is not taken lightly, stating, “I believe there is a season for everything and—for me—this season has come to an end.”

He expressed confidence in the future of the House despite concerns about departures, saying, “I’m confident the House is in good hands.” The departure adds to the growing congressional exodus, with 30 representatives and 7 senators planning to leave, leaving several seats without incumbent protection in the upcoming election. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report projects five open House seats as potential Democrat pickup opportunities, while none are listed for the GOP.

The Republican Party has faced challenges, including back-to-back underwhelming performances in 2022 and 2023 and internal struggles. In-fighting and disagreements over leadership, particularly after the rebellion against McCarthy, have marked recent GOP dynamics. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has also contributed to challenges, with Democrats capitalizing on the abortion issue in statehouse elections. The GOP has dealt with ethics accusations, including the expulsion of Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., over extensive breaches.

Meanwhile, Democrats are grappling with intraparty divisions over the traditional pro-Israel stance. Progressives have revolted against this stance, particularly following Hamas’ attack on Israel. The Fox News poll on October 12 revealed widespread disapproval for Congress across parties, with GOP lawmakers having a 30% approval rating, 7 points lower than Democrats, and a 66% disapproval rating, 6% higher than their Democratic counterparts. The political landscape continues to evolve as both parties navigate challenges and divisions.

In a shocking turn of events on Tuesday, the House of Representatives witnessed a split among members of the far-left “Squad” during votes on critical resolutions regarding Israel and the terrorist group Hamas.

Representatives Rashida Tlaib from Michigan and Cori Bush from Missouri, both part of the radical eight-person “Squad,” notably abstained from voting in favor of H. Res. 888, a resolution focusing on affirming Israel’s right to exist. Tlaib took a distinctive approach by voting “present,” while Bush refrained from voting altogether.

Jerusalem. Taylor Brandon via Unsplash.

The division continued with H. Res. 793, condemning Hamas’ vicious attack on Israel on October 7. Surprisingly, Bush abstained from voting on this resolution as well. Contrary to her previous stance, Tlaib aligned with the rest of the “Squad” in supporting the resolution despite her earlier reluctance to condemn the attack.

After the votes, Tlaib shared her perspective with Fox News Digital, emphasizing the need for both Israelis and Palestinians to live with democracy, safety, peace, and human dignity. She criticized H. Res. 888 for allegedly ignoring the existence of the Palestinian people and falling short of promoting peaceful coexistence. Tlaib argued for the recognition of Palestinians’ rights to coexist with Israelis in their historic homeland, advocating for equal rights and freedom.

Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Tlaib, and Pressley press conference via Wikimedia Commons.

In a decisive outcome, H. Res. 793 passed overwhelmingly with a 414-0 vote, while H. Res. 888 secured approval with a vote of 412-1. Notably, both resolutions required a two-thirds majority to pass.

Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, stood as the lone “No” vote against H. Res. 888. Massie explained his dissent in a post on X, expressing agreement with the resolution’s title and much of its language. However, he voiced concerns about the resolution equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism, arguing that while antisemitism is deplorable, expanding it to include criticism of Israel is unhelpful.

U.S. Congressman Thomas Massie speaking with supporters of U.S. Senator Rand Paul at the Myers Center at the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa. Gage Skidmore via Wikimedia Commons.

The voting landscape further featured several members from both parties who opted not to vote for either resolution, with reasons remaining unclear at this time.

The “Squad’s” apparent support for the resolutions signals a shift from their previous stance in the aftermath of Hamas’ attack, where all but one member voted against a resolution condemning antisemitism on American college campuses.

Tlaib, in particular, faced severe criticism for her response to the attacks. She had refused to condemn them and reiterated her debunked claim that Israel was responsible for the explosion at a Gaza hospital, reportedly resulting in hundreds of casualties.

The House took decisive action earlier this month, voting to censure Tlaib for “promoting false narratives” regarding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and for advocating the destruction of the state of Israel. While largely symbolic, the censure serves as a formal public rebuke of Tlaib’s comments.

In less than a year, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) aims to maintain the Republican majority in the House. While Democrats face challenges in the White House and the Senate, they believe they could regain the majority in the House if all goes their way in 2024.

Here are all the races Democrats are targeting in the next election to attempt to reclaim the U.S. House of Representatives:

Republican Celeste Maloy emerged victorious in Utah’s special election, securing the last vacant seat in the U.S. House of Representatives by defeating state Sen. Kathleen Riebe, a self-declared moderate.

The election, held in Utah’s 2nd Congressional District, was triggered by the departure of former Republican Rep. Chris Stewart in September, who resigned due to his wife’s unspecified illness. Maloy, who previously served as Stewart’s chief legal counsel, clinched the victory in a three-way primary election.

Maloy, emphasizing her rural southern Utah upbringing, a significant portion of the district, aligned herself with President Donald Trump and argued that the ongoing prosecutions against him are politically motivated.

Following her primary win, Maloy expressed excitement about representing rural and southern Utah, stating, “I think it’s time for that, and everybody’s ready for it.”

DDHQ: Republican Celeste Maloy has won the special election to U.S. House in Utah's 2nd Congressional District. pic.twitter.com/jkVPlrlbeI
— InteractivePolls (@IAPolls2022) November 22, 2023

In contrast, Riebe saw the race as a Democratic pickup opportunity and highlighted her experience as a school teacher, asserting that the district was ready for a change.

Expressing concern about the nation’s rising debt, Riebe vowed to join the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition if elected, emphasizing rational decision-making and moderate ideas.

Maloy, given Stewart’s substantial margin of victory in past elections, is considered the frontrunner in the special election. A Republican win provides the party with added support for close votes. The election was called by the Associated Press at 8:36 p.m. local time.

The 2024 elections are right around the corner, and the Republican Party is poised to take back the U.S. Senate with many seats up for grabs.

Here are some of the top seats the GOP could flip to take back in 2024 — and potentially secure both chambers of Congress for Republicans and possibly get the White House back from Joe Biden:
