Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will suspend his 2024 re-election campaign due to mounting pressure from Democratic colleagues, top donors, and Hollywood stars following a poor debate performance last month.
This unexpected decision comes as more Democratic lawmakers publicly urged Biden to step aside. Party leaders have reportedly been working to convince Biden, 81, that he might not be able to secure a victory against former President Trump, the 2024 GOP nominee, whom Biden defeated in the previous election.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president,” Biden stated in a public letter. “While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.”
Biden’s campaign staff insisted he was not ending his re-election bid, even as he was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Wednesday. This diagnosis followed several interviews and appearances meant to reassure supporters but instead gave critics, including those on the left, more reasons to doubt his capability.
Biden had delivered a compelling address at the recent NATO summit in Washington D.C., showcasing his ability to lead. Despite support from key figures like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Biden’s numerous gaffes, including calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “Putin” during a live address, continued to fuel concerns about his fitness for office.
Speculation about Biden’s campaign status dominated political discourse until two significant events shifted the focus: an assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania and Trump naming Sen. JD Vance as his running mate. However, calls for Biden to end his campaign resumed after Rep. Adam Schiff and other top Democrats reportedly had frank discussions with him.
Biden’s decision to suspend his campaign follows a turbulent period, including a challenging debate with Trump in June, which led to widespread panic within his party. His struggle to regain footing led to increasing calls from House Democrats for him to step aside.
Despite his attempts to reassure supporters and his defiant stance in a letter to congressional Democrats, concerns about his viability persisted. The Biden campaign’s meetings with Senate Democrats and other key figures failed to quell the growing doubts.
The president’s candid acknowledgment of his age and physical limitations during a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, highlighted his determination. “I know I’m not a young man, to state the obvious,” he said. “But I know what I do know. I know how to tell the truth. I know right from wrong. And I know how to do this job. I know how to get things done.”
However, slipping poll numbers and surging concerns about his age ultimately led to his decision to suspend his campaign, ending his bid for a second term, which began in April of last year.
This announcement also seems to mark the end of Biden’s half-century-long career in national politics, which began with his election to the Senate in 1972. Biden’s extensive career includes significant legislative achievements and serving as Vice President under Barack Obama for eight years. He initially considered a run for the 2016 election but decided against it while mourning his son Beau. Biden eventually secured the Democratic nomination in 2020 and defeated Trump to become President.
Biden then endorsed Kamala Harris, writing, “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
I’m sure Lujan is worried about her plan to make it to Washington.
Nope to Camel Toe. Say yes to the first generation immigrant Indian form India… Not a good fit for America or the world. IMHO.
You could have anointed anyone else, you could have went to the Convention and voted for anyone…but you anointed one.
If your desire was to disenfranchise your entire voting base, well Congratulations, this is a massive success. Your entire Political Party voting base had no option and no choice through the entire Primary season, even tho, your Party well knew of Been Hiden Biden’s mental health issues.
Camel Toe Harris is now none other than…”The Anointed One”. Not elected by her political party’s voters… but buy the few, less than 1,500 powerful people… Democracy in action? Or is this Communism in a full display?
I’m gonna go with communism.
No to the Toe!
I have been calling this “The Greatest Bait and Switch” in the world. Who will they put out there as Kamala will be a no show for democrat voters that can think for themselves and not just toe the DNC line. Will the DNC just keep swapping candidates until they get one with decent poll numbers? We will have to wait and see.
About the best argument against this has nothing to do with being vulgar — it is simply this : Biden is incompetent (that’s why he’s dropping out), therefore his selection is completely irrational!!!!
You think the world leaders show no respect and laugh at America with Joey boy wait until the cackling flatbacker is up. Lord watch over America as our people in Washington can’t handle the task!!
