Trump drops major hint about running mate pick

45th President Donald Trump hinted that he has a “pretty good idea” of who his vice-presidential running mate will be, but he plans to announce his choice at the Republican National Convention this summer. Trump discussed this during an interview with Fox News’ Aishah Hasnie at the Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C., after meetings with the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

When asked if his choice was present at any of the meetings, Trump responded, “Probably. I don’t want to go, but I think [it] will probably get announced during the convention. There were some good people, and we have some very good people.” The convention is scheduled to take place from July 15-18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Trump mentioned that Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin could be on his shortlist, saying, “I think I could consider that. Yes. I haven’t been asked that question, but he would be on that list.”

Hasnie also inquired about Trump’s views on Joe Biden as a father, in light of Hunter Biden’s recent conviction on federal gun charges. Trump acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, drawing from his understanding of similar family issues, “It’s a very tough thing. It’s a very tough situation for a father. It’s a very tough situation for a brother or sister. And it goes on and it’s not stopping. Whether it’s alcohol or drugs or whatever it may be. It’s a tough thing. And so that’s a tough moment for the family. It’s a tough moment for any family involved in that.”

Hunter Biden was convicted of three felony charges related to the purchase of a revolver in 2018 when he lied on a federal gun-purchase form about his drug use. Joe Biden has stated he will not use his presidential powers to appeal his son’s conviction, expressing pride in his son’s recovery from addiction.

Later in the interview, Trump mentioned he had not been asked to endorse former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan for the U.S. Senate. Hogan, a Republican who endorsed Nikki Haley over Trump and did not support him in the 2016 and 2020 elections, has a chance to win, according to Trump. “Yeah, I’d like to see him win. I think he has a good chance to win. I would like to see him win,” Trump said.
