According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, NBCUniversal’s head of advertising Linda Yaccarino has been tapped as Twitter’s new CEO.
Elon Musk wrote on Thursday, “Excited to announce that I’ve hired a new CEO for X/Twitter. She will be starting in ~6 weeks!” He added, “My role will transition to being exec chair & CTO (Chief Technology Officer), overseeing product, software & sysops.”
The New York Post wrote, “Yaccarino has been at NBCU for more than a decade and helped launch the company’s ad-supported Peacock streaming service. An NBCU spokesman said Yaccarino is in back-to-back rehearsals for an upfront presentation to advertisers.”
“Musk has described his acquisition of Twitter as an ‘accelerant’ for this plans to build a super-app similar to Tencent-owned WeChat, which allows users access to an array of services ranging from payments to food delivery and beyond,” the report continued.
Musk acquired Twitter last October for a whopping $44 billion and since has improved it with a new encrypted messaging function, changes to how users can tweet, and abolished the classist blue check verification system, instead allowing users to pay $8 per month and receive the perks of “Twitter Blue,” which comes with a blue verification badge.
