Rick Perry notifies President Trump he will step down as Energy Secretary

On Thursday, Energy Secretary Rick Perry notified President Trump that he would resign his post, reportedly notifying the President aboard Air Force One on the plane ride to Texas for Trump’s scheduled “Keep America Great” rally and events.

Despite saying in a Wall Street Journal interview that he planned to be in his job until Thanksgiving, that would not come to pass.

Perry was Texas’ longest-serving governor, from December 2000 to January 2015, and one of the longest-serving cabinet officials in the Trump Administration, since March 2017, being confirmed on a vote of 62-37, one of the widest margins for a Trump nominee.

It is unclear what Secretary Perry’s next step will be and who President Trump will choose to replace the outgoing secretary.
