On Monday, it was revealed that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will not run for an open U.S. Senate in his home state of Kansas.
According to the Washington Post, Pompeo told Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that he “would pass on running to replace retiring Sen. Pat Roberts.”
Before Pompeo’s decision, David Kensinger, a Kansas political consultant told the Los Angeles Times, “People who care about winning want to see Mike Pompeo run.”
It is unclear who will jump into the race, as current candidate Kris Kobach failed to clinch the governorship of the solid-red state in 2018, casting doubt on his ability to win a statewide race in 2020.
