On Friday, South Bend City Councilor Oliver Davis announced his support for Joe Biden, instead of his city’s mayor, Pete Buttigieg for president.
Davis explained, “When you’re flying in the middle of a storm, you want to make sure you have steady, experienced leadership.” He continued, “I believe that Vice President Biden has demonstrated throughout the years by having a steady hand, he can help lead us through these times, and with all of the challenges we face nationally and now even internationally, he has the relationships, has the skills, and I think he can bring us together in different ways.”
When asked about why he did not support Buttigieg, and if the South Bend mayor can win, Davis said, “I doubt it. I sincerely doubt it.”
The news comes as Buttigieg is polling an abysmal 2% among black voters, according to FiveThirtyEight national polling.
Even worse for Buttigieg, his campaign sent out mailers targeting black voters in South Carolina with a stock image of a Kenyan woman in the attempt to illustrate his plan for black Americans.
Earlier this month, a 2010 video resurfaced showing Buttigieg addressing a Tea Party group while running for Indiana State Auditor. One person on Twitter wrote, “He’s done. Absolutely done. Not a single Dem of color gonna vote for a dude who backed the g*****n Tea Party.”
