FBI launches investigation into Trump campaign hack: Iran could be behind it

The FBI has initiated an investigation into the alleged breach of documents from 45th President Donald Trump’s campaign, according to a statement released by the bureau on Monday.

“We can confirm the FBI is investigating this matter,” the FBI said in a statement.

On Saturday, the Trump campaign pointed fingers at Iran, accusing the nation of orchestrating the hack. This came after Politico reported receiving anonymous emails that contained internal documents related to the vetting of Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), who was recently selected as Trump’s running mate.

According to Politico, the anonymous communications began on July 22, originating from an AOL account, and included campaign-related material belonging to a “senior Trump campaign official.” Insiders confirmed the authenticity of the documents, which contained details about Vance’s history, past statements, and “potential vulnerabilities.”

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung asserted that the documents were “obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States,” with the intent to “interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process.”

Cheung further emphasized the belief that “the Iranians know that President Trump will stop their reign of terror just like he did in his first four years in the White House.” This statement was made in light of recent revelations by Microsoft that Iranian hackers had targeted a presidential campaign, and following reports of an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Trump.

On Saturday, Trump, 78, also claimed on Truth Social that one of his “many websites was hacked by the Iranian Government,” though he noted that they only accessed publicly available information. “Nevertheless, they shouldn’t be doing anything of this nature,” he added. “Iran and others will stop at nothing, because our Government is Weak and Ineffective, but it won’t be for long.”

Reports indicate that U.S. intelligence has found growing evidence that Iran may be plotting retaliatory actions against Trump, likely connected to the 2020 assassination of Qassem Soleimani, the leader of the elite Quds Force of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Trump has consistently stated that Soleimani was responsible for orchestrating attacks on U.S. troops in the Middle East, resulting in hundreds of casualties.

In response to the accusations, Iran has denied any involvement in online efforts to interfere with the upcoming election.
