Kamala Harris recently pledged to eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers, echoing a proposal previously announced by 45th President Donald Trump. During a campaign rally in Nevada, Harris made this commitment while addressing members of Culinary Union Local 226, vowing to fight for workers’ rights if elected president in November.
Harris’s announcement closely mirrors Trump’s promise from June, when he declared at a rally in Las Vegas that his administration, if elected, would eliminate taxes on tips. “We are not going to tax tips – the tax immediately is coming off,” Trump said during a roundtable event in Michigan. He emphasized that this policy would benefit a wide range of workers who rely on tips, from waitstaff to car attendants and caddies.
At the Nevada rally, Harris expressed her long-standing support for workers’ rights, referencing her past collaborations with the Culinary Union during her tenure as California’s Attorney General and as a U.S. Senator. “When I am President, we will continue our fight for working families of America, including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers,” Harris assured the crowd.
However, Trump criticized Harris’s recent adoption of the tip-tax elimination proposal, accusing her of copying his ideas for political gain. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Kamala Harris, whose ‘Honeymoon’ period is ENDING, and is starting to get hammered in the Polls, just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy… She has no ideas, she can only steal from me.”
Trump also highlighted Harris’s previous tax proposals, arguing that her latest promise contradicts her past support for significant tax increases. He concluded his statement with a call to “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
The former president has actively promoted his stance on tips, even leaving a $500 tip at a Philadelphia restaurant with a note reading, “Vote Trump, No Tax on Tip.” As both candidates continue to campaign, the issue of tax policies on tips is emerging as a key point of contention in the upcoming election.
