The Obamas finally endorse border czar Kamala Harris for president

Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have publicly endorsed Biden’s border czar, Kamala Harris, for the presidency. 

Barack Obama, who had been among the last prominent Democrat figures to give an endorsement, expressed his support for Harris, praising her for having the “vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands.”

In a post on social media platform X, Obama shared, “Earlier this week, Michelle and I called our friend @KamalaHarris. We told her we think she’ll make a fantastic President of the United States, and that she has our full support. At this critical moment for our country, we’re going to do everything we can to make sure she wins in November. We hope you’ll join us.”

The endorsement from the Obamas came after other key Democratic leaders, including President Biden, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Hakeem Jeffries, had already voiced their support for Harris. 

Biden had backed Harris soon after he announced his decision to step down from the 2024 presidential race on July 21.

Obama, known for being cautious in offering endorsements during presidential races, had waited to avoid overshadowing Biden’s announcement and to allow Harris to gain momentum. 

According to reports, he delayed his endorsement to support her campaign’s momentum, which reportedly raised over $100 million shortly after the announcement.

The Harris campaign is gearing up for the upcoming election, with Harris expected to select her vice-presidential running mate soon. 

This development comes as the Democratic National Committee prepares to solidify the nomination, with the “virtual” Democratic National Convention approaching. Harris is poised to become the second woman to lead the Democrat ticket after Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 presidential bid.
