The coordinated effort to prevent Biden from seeking re-election has been in motion for weeks, though Biden resisted, according to a source close to the Biden family.
The source described Biden’s frustration, paranoia, and anger as Democratic elites pressured him to bow out. The strategy included allowing Biden to participate in a televised debate with Republican candidate Donald Trump in Atlanta. Biden’s performance during the debate, where he appeared confused and froze at one point, was a turning point that convinced many he should not run.
“That debate was a set-up to convince Democrats that he couldn’t run for president,” the source said. Despite mounting calls for him to step down, Biden insisted on continuing his campaign until party leaders threatened to invoke the 25th Amendment, which allows for the vice president and cabinet to declare a president unfit for office.
The White House and the Democratic National Committee did not respond to The Post’s requests for comment. Following his decision to step down, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.
