U.S. Representative Donald Payne, Jr., a Democratic congressman from New Jersey, has passed away due to heart-related issues, as announced by U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson. At the age of 65, Payne’s health had been declining for several years, following in the footsteps of his father, Donald Payne Sr., who also served in Congress and died while in office in 2012.
Democrat New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy expressed his sorrow over the loss of Payne, whom he described as a dedicated advocate for New Jersey’s residents. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our friend, and a steadfast champion for the people of New Jersey, Congressman Donald Payne, Jr.,” Murphy stated. He praised Payne for his empathy and commitment, reflected in his long history of public service, from his early political roles in Newark and Essex County to over a decade in Congress. “With his signature bowtie, big heart, and tenacious spirit, Donald embodied the very best of public service,” Murphy added.
Governor Murphy also highlighted Payne’s contributions to improving the quality of life in Newark, particularly his efforts to ensure access to safe drinking water and to support local labor. “Donald’s love will live on in the homes of his neighbors in Newark, who now have access to safe drinking water, and in the good-paying jobs he helped create for his brothers and sisters in labor,” he said.
The Governor also shared his condolences with Payne’s family, acknowledging their significant loss. “And it will live on in his wife Beatrice, and their three children, Donald III, Jack, and Yvonne, who were the pride of his life. Our heartfelt prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
Payne’s passing was particularly poignant as he had been hospitalized since April 6 following a heart attack, during which he was placed on a ventilator, according to the New Jersey Globe.
House Speaker Mike Johnson also expressed his condolences, noting Payne’s significant role in Congress, where he represented New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District since 2012, succeeding his father. “We are saddened to be informed of the passing today of Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr., who had been serving New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District since 2012 and who succeeded his father in the same position. Our prayers are offered today for his family and friends, and especially his wife, Bea, and their three children,” Johnson stated.
Payne was known for his active participation on several key committees, including the House Homeland Security and Transportation & Infrastructure committees. He was also a prominent member of the Congressional Black Caucus and co-chaired various health-related caucuses, highlighting his commitment to public health issues.
He should follow it up by announcing the death of America. By his hand.
Amen, brother!
