Stacey Abrams’ failing election group on brink of implosion

Stacey Abrams’ organization, Fair Fight, known for its efforts to address voter suppression issues in Georgia, is undergoing significant downsizing, cutting 75% of its workforce. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported that this decision comes as the nonprofit grapples with financial challenges, holding $2.5 million in debt against $1.9 million in available funds. Salena Jegede, the board chair, highlighted the critical financial shortfall, stating, “We face a serious funding deficit that makes our current trajectory unsustainable.”

Initially, Fair Fight demonstrated robust fundraising capabilities, amassing over $100 million in its initial three years. The organization even secured enough funds to finance a Super Bowl ad in 2019 featuring Abrams. However, post-2020 election cycle, the financial health of Abrams’ nonprofit has seen a stark decline, with its net assets dwindling significantly by the end of 2022.

Adding to its financial woes, Fair Fight Action, the political branch of the organization, was recently mandated to pay approximately $231,000 in legal fees following the dismissal of a prolonged voter suppression lawsuit in Georgia. The organization’s legal expenditures have been substantial, exceeding $25 million over two years, impacting its financial reserves.

Amidst these financial challenges, concerns have been raised about the allocation of Fair Fight’s funds, particularly the substantial amounts directed to legal fees and political activities closely associated with Abrams. A significant portion of the legal fees was paid to a law firm connected to Abrams’ former campaign chair, and substantial donations were made to a pro-Abrams political committee.

Despite these hurdles, Jegede remains optimistic about the future, expressing commitment to restructuring and refocusing the organization for the upcoming electoral cycles, emphasizing their continued dedication to democracy and voter rights. Fair Fight has yet to comment on these developments.
