GOP nominates Democrat to run to replace ousted Rep. George Santos

Republicans in New York have chosen Mazi Melesa Pilip as their candidate for the upcoming special election in the Long Island seat left vacant by George Santos. The selection follows a rigorous vetting process by local leaders seeking redemption after supporting the ousted congressman facing criminal fraud charges.

The Feb. 13 race is crucial in determining which party controls the House in 2025, and Pilip, a recently reelected Nassau County legislator, is set to hold a news conference in Massapequa, Nassau County.

In a surprising turn, Pilip, who has a background as an Ethiopian-born Jew and served in the Israeli Defense Forces, is an enrolled Democrat, despite winning local elections as a Republican.

The Nassau County GOP chair, Joe Cairo, made the choice based on her perceived suitability for the current political climate. However, her husband’s medical practice, where Pilip worked as operations director, faced a lawsuit in 2020 for alleged back rent non-payment, with $500,000 still owed on its lease.

Despite these revelations, some see Pilip’s Democratic affiliation as an advantage in a predominantly Democratic district. Former Republican Rep. Pete King noted her proven track record as a vote-getter, emphasizing her dedication to campaigning, even while pregnant and raising twins among her seven children.

Following the controversy surrounding George Santos, New York Republicans have conducted approximately 20 candidate interviews, with a thorough vetting process involving background checks by three external firms. Candidates like Afghanistan War veteran Kellen Curry acknowledge the necessity of vetting to avoid distractions.

Other contenders, including Israeli Defense Forces veteran Daniel Norber, express support for the stringent process in light of the Santos fiasco. Despite the scrutiny, those not selected have indicated their willingness to rally behind the chosen Republican Party candidate to ensure a unified front.
