Zelensky to again visit White House in hopes of more war funds

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to make his third visit to Washington on Tuesday since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, with his last visit occurring in September. Scheduled to address an all-senators meeting following invitations from Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, Zelensky will also meet with House Speaker Mike Johnson. The visit comes against the backdrop of a stalled aid package for Ukraine in Congress.

A White House statement confirmed the visit, emphasizing the enduring commitment of the United States to support Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion, even as an aid package remains entangled in legislative obstacles. The aid bill, rejected by the Senate, encompasses $111 billion, aiming to assist Ukraine and contribute to humanitarian aid in Gaza and anti-drug trafficking operations at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Joe Biden, echoing warnings from his defense secretary, emphasized the urgency of passing a $64 billion aid package for Ukraine, cautioning that a failure to do so might lead to U.S. troops confronting Russia in Europe. Biden’s invitation to Zelensky aims to reinforce this commitment and address the pressing needs of Ukraine amid escalating missile and drone strikes by Russia.

During their meeting, Zelensky and Biden are anticipated to discuss collaborative efforts for the upcoming year, including joint projects focusing on weapon production and air defense systems. The visit follows the weekend visit of Alexander Soros, a prominent supporter of the Zelensky government and the largest independent financier of Ukraine. Soros pledged $1 million to First Lady Zelenska’s charity during his visit and announced a partnership with the Open Society Foundations.

As Ukraine faces intensified attacks, with nearly 100 reported air strikes by Russia within a 24-hour period, Zelenska warned of citizens being in “mortal danger” without Western military aid. The plea for assistance emphasizes the critical nature of the situation, with Zelenska stating, “In simple words, we cannot get tired of this situation, because if we do, we die.” The ongoing geopolitical tensions underscore the significance of Zelensky’s visit to the White House and the broader implications for international support in the face of the conflict.
