MICHIGAN – Daylen Howard, State Representative candidate for Michigan’s 71st district had an unexpected online visitor when he announced his candidacy last week.
Less than 72 hours after announcing his campaign kickoff Howard was met with a radical socialist troll who told him, “Go back to the plantation,” on Twitter. The comment is still on his account and the user remains active so far.
Republican Daylen Howard was attacked online by a user and was told to “Go back to the plantation.” He was less than 72 hours from his campaign kickoff event.
Howard, who is African American and running as a Republican, gave the Pinion Post an exclusive comment stating, “Racist remarks like this have no place in America. This is one of the many reasons I’m running to stop this hateful rhetoric and be a voice of reason for all Michiganders.”
Despite the negative online comment, Howard had a successful campaign launch with a jam-packed campaign launch last Friday. He is a first-time candidate running to replace Republican Ben Frederick, the Majority Leader. Frederick is termed out after this year.
His campaign remains focused on the fact that he is not a typical politician. Unlike others, he grew up having to save every dollar and working part-time jobs at Jewelry stores. In a few short years, he worked his way up to managerial levels and was supporting himself at the age of 18.
Howard is also the son of a single working mother, business manager, and community activist.
MLive recently reported that fewer than 10 black Republicans have ever been elected to state-level positions in Michigan’s history. In 2022, Michigan has currently 5 African Americans running for different offices, including Howard.
