Conservative lawmaker stabbed to death

On Friday, a Conservative lawmaker in the British Parliament was stabbed to death while speaking to constituents in a Methodist church.

The Washington Examiner reports:

Sir David Amess, 69, was attacked at the midday meeting, allegedly by a man who walked into the Methodist church with Amess’s constituents.

His office confirmed that Amess was stabbed, and the man was arrested, police said.

“He was stabbed several times,” said John Lamb, a local official who witnessed the attack.

“Horrific and deeply shocking news,” said Labour Party Leader Keir Starmer. “Thinking of David, his family and his staff.” Amess represented Southend West in Essex, England.

Amess was a conservative who supported Brexit and many pro-Brexit movements. He has served in Parliament since 1983. According to his Parliamentary website:

He has been an active MP in Parliament, sponsoring bills including the Abortion (Amendment) Bill (1996-7), the Protection Against Cruel Tethering Act (1988) and the Warm Homes Bill, which passed into law in December 2000 as the Warm Homes and Energy Conservation Act. With over 30 years’ experience in Parliament, David often chairs debates in the House of Commons on various different issues. David’s main interests and areas of expertise are animal welfare and pro-life issues.
