Conservative group ALEC rebukes attack by PAC supporting candidate who called Trump an ‘a**hole’

On Monday, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) sent a letter to New Mexico television stations running an ad by a super PAC calling itself “Citizens for a United New Mexico” running a nasty ad campaign against a pro-Trump candidate for New Mexico’s 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives, former state Rep. Yvette Herrell.

The super PAC, which is supporting another candidate, Claire Chase, blasts Herrell as anti-Trump for attending a 2015 ALEC conference where a vendor at the event had a booth with a Trump piñata. The ad voiceover reads, “[Herrell] attend an anti-Trump soirée at a San Diego hotel where they hung a Trump piñata from the ceiling.”

ALEC’s letter to local news stations reads, “The ad references an ‘anti-Trump conference’ that Rep. Herrell attended in San Diego while a state legislator. The statement is completely false. The 2015 ALEC Annual Meeting took place in San Diego, but it was NOT an ‘anti-Trump’ conference. It was not a conference for or against any candidate for president of either political party.”

The group writes, “The so-called ‘piñata’ incident referenced in the television ad was a tasteless stunt within the booth of one vendor out of dozens of exhibitors in the exhibit hall. It had nothing to do with the conference itself, nor was it endorsed by ALEC or any ALEC official. Blaming ALEC as an organization, or Rep. Herrell as an attendee, for the unofficial and non-sanctioned actions of an exhibitor, is completely false and beyond a reasonable assertion.”

The letter continues, “The television ad disparages ALEC and paints my client in a false light, not to mention its false claims about Rep. Herrell.”

Claire Chase, the candidate supported by the super PAC claims to be a Republican, but as reported by Breitbart News, called President Trump an “a**hole unworthy of the office,” and said she voted for Gary Johnson. Now, Chase is trying to cling to the pro-Trump message, despite her vile attacks on the President.
