While 2020 Democrat presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) is stuck in Washington D.C. for the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, he is sending one of his most loyal supporters in his stead to Iowa to energize his voters.
Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY)will be appearing at two Iowa rallies for Sanders, while he serves as a juror on the impeachment trial, including many long nights. Tuesday’s impeachment trial lasted 13 hours, adjourning at 1:50 in the morning on Wednesday. Sanders may no doubt doze off, along with other senators.
Other candidates who serve in the U.S. Senate, such as Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Michael Bennett (D-CO), will send friends and family to stand in their place for the next few days of the impeachment trial.
The absence of the two frontrunner candidates in the race, Sanders and Warren, may benefit candidates who can physically campaign in the Hawkeye State, such as South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and former Vice President Joe Biden.
At an earlier Iowa rally for Sanders, AOC told the crowd that Americans who ask how to pay for Sanders’ socialist policies “value war.” We will see what she has to say during her time in Iowa, leading up to the February caucuses. Sanders previously said he would consider AOC for a key role in his administration if he wins in 2020.
