Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan, who is running for 2020 the Democrat nomination for president announced Thursday that he is dropping out of the race.
In a Twitter post, he wrote “I’m announcing today that I am withdrawing from the Presidential campaign. I got into this race in April to really give voice to the forgotten people of our country. I look forward to continuing that fight. Thank you, to everyone who supported this campaign.”
In the video, Ryan said, “”I got into this race in April to really give voice to the forgotten people of our country: the workers who have been left behind, the businesses who have been left behind, the people who need health care or aren’t getting a quality education, or are saddled by tremendous debt.”
The move by Ryan to drop out further thins out the Democrat herd, but another contender for the Democrat nomination is doubling down on her commitment to the race.
Late Friday night, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), announced in a statement and a Twitter video that she will not run for re-election to Congress in Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District, and instead asked supporters to support her candidacy for president.
In the statement, she wrote, “At this time when our country is so divided, and our world is moving ever closer to a nuclear holocaust; a time when we may be sucked into another even more disastrous war in the Middle East, and tensions with other nuclear powers are escalating, and with that, a new arms race and Cold War that can only end in nuclear catastrophe, I believe I can best serve the people of Hawaiʻi and our country as your President and Commander-in-Chief. ”
Gabbard’s decision to fully commit to the presidential race comes shortly after a quite public feud sparked by failed 2016 Democrat nominee for president Hillary Clinton, accusing Gabbard of being a “Russian asset.”
Gabbard’s response to Clinton was “You, the queen of warmongers, embodiment of corruption, and personification of the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party for so long, have finally come out from behind the curtain. … It’s now clear that this primary is between you and me. Don’t cowardly hide behind your proxies. Join the race directly.
In wake of Clinton’s comments toward Gabbard, reports show the former secretary of state, senator and first lady is considering another run in 2020.
